CLUB HISTORY

In 1961 a group of proactive golfers formed the Waimakariri Gorge Golf Club on Crown Land near the Waimakariri Gorge Bridge.

Many years later members look with great pride on a now well established and presented golf course capable of offering all golfers a very enjoyable yet challenging day out.

Situated at the foothills of the magnificent Southern Alps and only a 45 minute drive from Christchurch International Airport is an 18 hole golf course which will delight from the learner to the most experienced player.

As well as the manicured fairways and greens the Waimakariri Gorge Golf Course can boast some of Canterbury's finest scenery. If not for the challenging course then come and play for the spectacular gorge and river views, the snow capped mountains. With the wide open spaces the course gives a feel of isolation. You’ll feel like the only person playing the entire course most days.

We have ample parking and are a registered Park Over Property with the NZMCA with the ability to park up a camper or caravan while on a golfing holiday. The club facilities are open for all players following club events on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday afternoons.

Private functions and course bookings are available; with a kitchen, bar, outdoor bbq area and changing rooms.

VISITORS GUIDE TO WAIMAKARIRI GORGE GOLF CLUB----WELCOME.

By John Harrison

Report to office, pay a modest green fee,

Our greens are real good, and the scenery free.

The members are friendly, and the course you will rate,

When you go home, you’ll say “that day was great”

Hole 1 is called The Drive,

Don’t go left [ob] to stay alive,

Many overcompensate and go right,

Then with the trees they must fight.

Hole 2

Only the big hitters reach this green in two,

Pars are the prize for just the few.

So open your shoulders and give it a go,

Surprise yourself, you just never know.

Hole 3

Slight dog leg to right,

As you tee off green is out of sight.

Helps off tee if you hit a fade,

If you can then a par can be made.

Hole 4

One of the harder par 3’s going round,

A wide range of club selection to be found.

More tee shots find road than green,

Magpies are the only birdies seen.

Hole 5

Not a super long par five,

Avoid the trees to survive,

Incorporates dog leg left and fairway dip,

Avoid bunker trap is the tip.

Hole 6

Hit your tee shot over slight incline,

If you hit a fade you’ll be just fine,

Now the green comes into sight,

Hit a good second and “she’ll be right”

Hole 7

Key word on this hole is straight,

Go OB in the hedges and you’ll make eight,

Stay from tee to green in a line,

That way you’re sure to be fine.

Hole 8

A seemingly short downhill par three,

Club selection is the key.

Don’t let the scenery distract from your shot,

An easy par 3, it certainly is not.

Hole 9

Shot to the corner is the first task,

What to do now you may well ask,

Could be bogey or worse before you’re done,

Has earned the right to be stroke hole one.

Hole 10

Your second shot here will have a say,

This green will spit your ball away,

Then you’re chipping from out the rough,

Not impossible but certainly tough.

Hole 11 [238m]

Really clever players can reach green in one,

But not too often you’ll see that done.

A risk and reward hole, to be found,

Where bogeys and doubles often abound.

Hole 12 “PANORAMA” Feature hole.

When you stand atop of PANORAMA,

A hole that has seen plenty of drama,

Even though you score a seven,

You realise you’re close to Heaven.

Hole 13 “Looking Down”

The challenge in front of you is clear to see.

Long straight drive is what you need.

Your reward is a short iron into green.

Which following your good drive, can now be seen.

Hole 14

Easiest par 5 on the course,

Two good shots hit with force,

Birdies and eagles are a chance,

For your reputation to enhance.

Hole 15

An innocent par three it may look,

So many players come unstuck.

For every par that is made,

Many more don’t make the grade.

Hole 16

This is driving range with flag in view,

Wide fairways bring out RORY in you,

Quite a long par four,

2 good hits will help you score.

Hole 17

Another hole with magnificent view,

Wedge or mid-iron will do.

Only 135m downhill, short par three,

Not as easy as it looks from tee.

Hole 18

You’re on your way home, finish line in sight,

The sloping green can have a real bite,

You’ll need a good approach to survive,

In “Nor’ Wester” plays like a par five.

19 TH

Off to the 19TH, meet friendly members and plenty of banter,

Did you find it hard, or just a canter.

Have a cold beer, while the course you rate,

COME BACK SOON AND TELL YOUR MATES,
